About This Lesson
Engage students in meaningful conversations about ecology, Indigenous knowledge, and our relationship with the natural world through this thought-provoking lesson based on the work of Robin Wall Kimmerer. This resource features a short, engaging video introduction alongside three differentiated worksheets for Grades 3–5, 6–8, and 9–12, making it easy to adapt across grade levels.
In the video, students are introduced to key ideas from Kimmerer’s work, including seeing plants as teachers, the concept of the “Honorable Harvest,” and the importance of integrating Indigenous knowledge with Western science. These themes encourage students to rethink how humans interact with nature and consider their role in environmental stewardship.
Each worksheet is designed to deepen understanding through age-appropriate activities:
- Grades 3–5: Creative drawing, reflection, and simple decision-making tasks that introduce caring for the Earth as a reciprocal relationship
- Grades 6–8: Vocabulary development, comprehension, and application activities focused on sustainability and responsibility
- Grades 9–12: Critical analysis of ecological ethics, colonization of knowledge, and modern environmental challenges
This lesson is ideal for:
